Left With The Dead A "Gathering Dead" Novella eBook Stephen Knight

Another great read by Knight. Spoiler alert.

This one starts with Special Forces Sgt. Dave Gartrell running for his life. He's carrying a flare to attract the attention of the walking dead. To lead them away from McDaniel's and those he's trying to get to the Coast Guard cutter in the East River.

It works. The dead all follow him.

Dave tosses the flare and runs like hell. The dead follow the flare. Mindless eating machines that they are.

Dave ends up in a Starbucks. This is where he meet Jolie. A Jolie who was in the Starbucks for food. Dave himself is hungry as hell and grabs a few of the stale pastries that Jolie has already helped herself to.

After speaking with Jolie Dave decides to accompany her to her apartment which next door to the Starbucks.

Once there Dave finds Jolie has a son. Jaden. He's autistic and anything out of the ordinary will upset him to the point of screams. Screams which will attract the dead. Dave knows the dead can get into a building. They already did when he. McDaniel's and the rest of the team were forced out of a building and into a run for their lives.

Jolie tells Dave she's waiting for her husband who was on his way home.

Of course Dave knows that the husband will probably never arrive. He talks Jolie into going with him. He really doesn't want to get involved with these civilians but feels he just can't leave them on their own.

Husband does show up. He's a walker and he has the key to the building. A key which he uses to open the door to the walking dead.

Dave, Jolie and Jaden get out of the building. Dave has been in contact with the Army and a group is in the underground subway tunnel just down the street. That's where Dave and Jolie head.

So begins one damned fine read.

This one has Dave, Jolie, Jaden, husband Jack, the walking dead, a tunnel, a Dave doing his best to get Jolie and Jaden into the tunnel, a fight with the walking dead, a Dave who comes to realize just what McDaniel's had to deal with in Afghanistan, a Jolie who dies screaming for Dave to save her son, a Dave Gartrell who does the unthinkable two seconds before rescue arrives and a Dave Gartrell who will live to fight another day.

Five Stars. Great read.

Left With The Dead A "Gathering Dead" Novella eBook Stephen Knight Reviews

Knight is breathing new life into a tired subgenre. What I like about "Left With The Dead" and "The Gathering Dead," is that there aren't any stupid characters doing stupid things, where the reader is hoping beyond hope that the zombies get them sooner rather than later. The characters here are well drawn, intelligent, and doing whatever they can to survive the hordes of the dead.

Knight's writing is clean, meticulously crafted, and he knows how to write combat sequences. The ever increasing tension throughout had me hoping beyond hope that the characters would make it to the end of the book. There are instances when I cringed, and not because of a character's predictable or bad decision, but because the characters herein are making all the *right* decisions, and *still* defecation impacts the rotary oscillator.

I haven't felt the same rush since watching "Aliens."

I can't say anything more about this particular novella except, if you enjoyed the first Gathering Dead book, then this is an addition that raises an already high bar. And for the price, you're robbing the walking dead.

Very much recommended.
Lots of people say "I Am Legend" is one of the greatest post apocalypse short-stories ever written. Well, move over Richard Matheson cause here comes Stephen Knight! Immediately following the harrowing events of his 1st novel in this series "The Gathering Dead", Knight gives us an outstanding "solo story" of one of the main characters from the previous book (I won't name him for fear of spoiling it for anyone who hasn't yet read "The Gathering Dead"). Whereas "The Gathering Dead" was a great full length novel about a squad of special forces soldiers trying to rescue an invaluable scientist, "Left With The Dead" is much more personal and intimately horrifying.

This story is about a tough-as-nails special forces soldier caught alone in a major city overrun by zombies. With limited ammo, he is forced to use his wits in order to survive and along the way he is forced to reassess himself not just as a soldier but also as a human being. Again, no spoilers! LOL

I've read all of Stephen Knight's printed books (in order)
1) The Gathering Dead
2) Left With The Dead
3) City Of The Damned
4) The Rising Horde (Volume One)
5) The Rising Horde (Volume Two)

I would have to say that Left With The Dead is easily my favorite of his printed novels but City Of The Damned is my favorite full-length novel. However, that being said, ALL of his novels are gut-wrenching, page-turning addictions. His familiarity with special forces tactics, weaponry and witty character dialogue is insanely competent (definitely much better than a host of other zombie apocalypse authors). I have not had this much fun reading his novels since I read "Armor" by the late John Steakley over 20 years ago (which BTW, is still an excellent read especially if you liked Starship Troopers...sorry I digress).

Knight has been pumping out a couple novels each year for the past 3 years or so (I think) and I just ordered his latest paperback Earthfall (totally unrelated to his other books as far as I can tell). Whatever this guy puts out, I WILL DEFINITELY BUY (and at this point unquestioningly). His books are that captivating.

P.S. --- Mr. Knight, please find a way to print your other e-books (particularly White Tiger and Hackett's War). I hate e-books.
