Dearly Beloved A Zombie Novel Lia Habel Books

By the end of the twenty-second century, much of the planet was devastated; the United States nuked itself into a united wasteland. Central and South America consolidated as New Victoria with the capital in New London, Nicaragua. The society is based on the historians' interpretation of life in Britain during the reign of the late nineteenth century monarch.

Not all is idyllic as the Laz virus has created sentient and feral zombies. Most humans refuse to distinguish between the two classes of zombies as a majority of the humans believe a truly dead zombie is a good zombie. However, some individuals like teenager Nora Dearly knows otherwise ever since she met Punk undead Bram Griswold who saved her life (see Dearly, Departed). The civil rights issue explodes into hostilities especially between the Changed dead and the Murder alive. Collateral damage is an acceptable norm by the two enemies as each believes innocent civilians is an oxymoron. However, as both extremist sects focus on a zombie sympathizer who's dearly father the scientist seeks a cure for Lax, the heated dispute changes for the worst when a zombie with a new strain of the virus emerges.

The key to this great futuristic urban fantasy is Habel World as the author makes her vision seem vividly real through an insightful historiographical premise and a racist profiling. Action-packed, readers will relish the second Dearly thriller as the heroine and her allies push for equal rights for all, her endeavor enables the Changed and the Murder to agree on one thing: Nora's permanent demise.

Their love knows no end... well, his doesn't. Can a Steampunk lady from the crusty upper class find unconditional love with a handsome, urban-guerilla zombie?

Dearly Beloved is the sequel to Lia Habel's novel Dearly, Departed which I did not know when I originally made the request for the Advance Reader's Copy (Yes, I know, shame on me for not doing my homework but the premise sounded good. It was a zombie story! What of it?) At any rate, when I understood that it was the second book in a series it all began to make sense to me. It explains my feeling of being slightly lost, albeit momentarily, through the first chapter or so. This is not the first time I've accidently read a story out of series order (probably won't be the last either) and I apologize to the author for not being able to connect Dearly, Departed (which I did not read) with Dearly, Beloved. It also explains why some of the characters felt, to me, so familiar to each other both in dialogue and action. This is a very good thing for a second book in a series, by the way. You want your characters to interact with familiarity and understand some of each other's motives and emotions. All that said, this could have been, in my opinion, a stand-alone story on its own merits my confusion not withstanding. Dearly, Beloved is a very good story that contains intricate sub-plot twists, a world full of unusual (sometimes bizarre) characters, and multiple political and social points of view. Habel is a competent writer, has exactly the right voice needed to create inventive stories in the genre, and managed to integrate unique and creative ideas into her narrative. Always an advantage in a genre overflowing with overused tropes, memes, and cliché.

The interesting idea here is that zombies can lead fairly normal lives if they reanimate early enough to prevent too much deterioration to the brain and are able to control their animalistic lust for consuming human flesh. And in this world zombies are considered second-rate citizens that many believe should not be afforded the same rights as the living. The socio-political climate is in a delicate balance that's about to boil over. A dangerous standoff exists between "The Changed," a radical group of sentient zombies fighting for their survival, and "The Murder," a squad of paramilitary rebels determined to terminate the living dead and their living allies. Nora Dearly and her zombie boyfriend, Bram, fight together to keep both their worlds from erupting into social unrest and violence while attempting to understand the unique complications of their living/undead new love. Hell of a way to develop a budding relationship!

Those of you familiar with my blog know that the Romance genre is one that I normally do not read or review. This particular book then presented me with a serious review dilemma. Should I read Dearly, Beloved with the pre-formed notion that I'd more than likely rate it low simply because it is a Romance or do I take the chance and hope that the Zombie elements outweigh the endearments? The answer? Dearly, Beloved is, in all actuality, an excellent Zombie novel with interesting and captivating elements of Romance, social reform, violence, and xenophobia deftly woven into the backstory. While not quite the type of story I normally showcase here Dearly, Beloved was a surprisingly intelligent, creative, and entertaining read.

File with Virus Apocalypse, Neo-Victorian Gothic Romance, Noir Steampunk, zombies, The Walking-Dead meets Romance, high-society, adventure, futuristic thriller, social unrest and reform, commando guerilla zombies, soft porn, and living corpses.

2. Dearly, Beloved (2012)
Please tell me there is going to be another book in this series! I need another book! I loved every second of this book...the characters, the world, the romance. I'm actually kind of surprised at the average rating of this book, but I can see how this book could only be for certain people. I think one of the problems was that there was too many POV's (6 in all), and yes, I would have been more than happy with just reading Nora and Bram, but I think one of the things that make this series special is that the reader is able to experience everything in the world; see everything, but still be surprised in the end.

So let's start with the characters. There are some new characters, mainly Laura (since chapters are written from her POV). Her story was absolutely heartbreaking, but very interesting to read. I loved being able to have an inside view of what was going on with the Changed. In my opinion, Laura's POV was very effective, and helped the story move along. We also get to hear from Vespertine and Michael. Even though I really can't stand these characters, and I could have done without Vespertine's POV, I still enjoyed reading them. Michael is obsessed with Nora, and will do anything to get her. I think his story, along with his father's, is going in a very interesting direction, and am excited to see how it plays out.

Bram...I don't even have words to describe how much I love Bram. He is a hunkalicious dead guy/zombie, and such a gentleman. You could tell with every word about Nora, how much he loved her. Nora was amazing to read again. I love how strong and caring she is. She just jumps right in to a situation if someone she cares about is in danger. She doesn't give a second thought to what might happen to her. I seriously loved reading from Nora's POV; I couldn't ask for a better heroine. The one thing I liked about Bram and Nora's relationship was that it was slow, and not full of drama. Usually an author will add in drama that is silly and tears the couple apart for a couple books. But not here. Ms. Habel gave us a sweet romance that was is made much sweeter by the ending. There is a certain "race against time" because Bram doesn't have long until he's gone forever, but that doesn't get in Nora's way. I have to admit, the ending of this book was one of the funniest, sweetest, and most romantic endings I have ever read. I loved how the witnesses to Nora and Bram's wedding were cats, and that she got married in a white robe because that was the only white thing she had.

This is an amazing series, and I sincerely hope there is another in the series because I would read it in a heartbeat.
Dearly, Departed was one of the first zombie books I ever read, and I'm happy to say that few compare to the world that Ms. Habel has introduced to readers. Plus, the cover of this book is absolutely gorgeous, just like the first one.
