Raising Innocence A Rylee Adamson Novel Book 3 edition by Shannon Mayer Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Every time I finish a Rylee Adamson book I wish I could continue on to the next one. I am reading these far too slow for my taste, but review books take up most of my reading time. I really enjoyed this one. It was fast paced and action packed. Rylee is so awesome, although at times she is a bit abrupt bordering on over the top. She’s still one of my favorite urban fantasy heroines.
This particular storyline was creepy and gross and I loved it. I also loved that we got to see many of the same characters from the first two books. I need more O’Shea in my life though. I don’t think I can wait as long between books now since so much is heating up and now we have new awesome characters. I must read at least 1 Rylee a month from now on. That is the new rule because everyone should have some kick butt Rylee in their lives.
I love discovering a writer who puts equal thought into character development as into plot twists. Shannon Mayer's skill and creativity brings you stories you can fall into, without worrying about being thrown out by questionable character action or structure blunders.
Mayer's talent means you hit the ground running and back story devolps naturally, just as it does in the real world. You don't wade through sluggish pages of past to get to what is important for hero Ryleeee (insert a howl here) right now in the storystory progression. It's refreshing. It's entertaining. It's books you don't want to put down.
Plots not only make exciting reading -- they make sense for the characters to be involved in. Character devolpment is organic. Each adventure, each challenge, becomes a springboard to the next step.
Exciting, original without pulling punches...can't wait for the next installment!
Rylee's back for round three, and things are getting good. I'd say this is 3.5 stars, heading for four.
For this installment, Rylee hops across the pond, although not until after a major incident with Milly. I didn't find this as abrupt as some others apparently did given what they put in their reviews, but I will say that for someone as otherwise loyal as Rylee it did strike me as problematic how quickly she made up her mind in this matter. Otherwise, we continue with classic Rylee, meeting even more new types of magical beings, both friend and foe, and sometimes the line isn't so clear, which I found a nice change from the previous installments. Strong action, significant developments in plot and character development, and a willingness to do something other than standard are all strong suits of this series as a whole and of this episode in particular. Comic relief provided by Alex is a definite bonus. So why not four stars? Well, as previously mentioned, the reaction Rylee had to Milly struck me as incongruous with her established character. Also, while Mayer does deserve credit for giving this book a real ending, there are a lot of issues left unresolved, too many for my taste. It's one thing to leave the door open to the next book, but in this case issues that were unresolved at the end of book two are still open and then new concerns have been added; it's all a bit much and makes me worry the story might start losing focus, although it hasn't yet.
So, since this book three, I don't think I really need to make a recommendation. If you've already read this far, you know whether or not this series is for you. All I would add is that this is probably the best yet and I do hope it just keeps getting better in the next chapter.
As the third installment to the series, I have to say that I'm completely hooked. Rylee is a kick butt heroine and the entire cast of characters are fun to read. The mystery is not only entertaining but unique and the overaching plot simply pulls you into wanting more. These books are fairly short, this one again being under 180 pages, but as I mentioned in my previous review, the pages are not wasted. There's plenty of development, action and drama and I'd take a read like this any day over pages of descriptions, angst, and inner dialogue. For those of you who haven't read the first two, this is not a place to start. The book does not waste time reintroducing characters and summarizing previous books.
The series picks up after the events of Immune and starts with Rylee's world in utter turmoil. I don't want to give spoilers but to say, Rylee immediately has to deal with much loss and betrayal. Liam O'Shea has run off, her best friend Milly is not what she seems to be and the FBI Arcane Division needs Rylee's help to track down missing children in London. Rylee doesn't think she can handle the emotions she'll have to deal with tracking them down but the FBI's ace in the hole is that they will bring her to meet another Tracker like herself. Unfortunately, this tracker is dying and Rylee has a small window of opportunity. Overall, she's completely stunned to learn she's not the only one of her kind, so she accepts the job and finds herself up against some very powerful adversaries from both sides of the pond.
These stories are pretty much non stop and action packed. Interestingly enough, since the location turns to London, I couldn't help but notice that Riley said "bloody" and "bugger" quite a bit and it seemed a little off since she's American. Aside from that, most of the characters are back, but some in limited and heart wrenching capacity. In addition to harpies, trolls, demons, vampires, daywalkers, ogres, witches, and werewolves, we can now add druids, necromancers and zombies to the fold. One of my favorite characters takes a back seat in this installment which led to my slight disappointment, but great new characters are also introduced. The mystery of the blue socks is also revealed. While the book unfolds two major plot threads, only one is brought to it's conclusion and the other is to be continued. The only thing I can say is, I won't complain as long as this author keeps writing these books as fast as she does. It's a fantastic series and I'm looking forward to future installments and a much desired reunion.
